Sea Level

If you work with me, one thing you will learn is that I have theories and philosophies about design that I simply can’t contain. I also, as all designers do, have certain concepts that I return to in order to solve design challenges. The application of these concepts change from use to use, but the approach often stays close to the core idea.

Here’s one of my favorites: sea level. The idea is to use paint in a way so as to split the volume of a space. Imagine a room that was dropped into a sea of paint and then extracted, half the room would be painted, half would not. I often use this as a way to change paint colors between floors in a staircase, as I am not a fan of the accent wall. Room 17 of the Hotel Chateau Bethlehem in Maastricht illustrates the point very well.
